attack comes out and boom it just dropped down in a matter of moments. >> reporter: what triggered that was a tweet from the "associated press" saying falsely there had been explosions at the white house president obama had been hurt. the dow dropped 150 points and quickly recovered. in less than 5 minutes as much as $136 billion by one estimate may have changed hands. the reason high frequency computer trading. still, it wasn't enough to put brakes on trades. >> the dow only moved down a little less than 1%. that's not big enough to hit those alarm bells and those safeguards. >> reporter: some analysts say there don't seem to be sufficient safeguards on twitter accounts which when hacked quickly distribute bad information. >> it's too easy to hackneying especially twitter. they are still relying on simple passwords. >> reporter: cnet writer and tech blogger molly woods says while twitter is protected legally it's increasingly untrustworthy.

>> they have to have good content. if you can't trust what you read on twitter, they will stop reading twitter and that's a problem for their business. >> reporter: twitter declined to talk with us saying it doesn't comment on individual accounts for privacy and security reasons. the "associated press" says it's cooperating with twitter to investigate the hackers. >> it does start to get a lot scarier, though, when the goal is to spread misinformation. you have to wonder if the hackers today profited from the stock market drop after the false ap news. >> reporter: -- electronic army has claimed responsibility for the hack. but the "associated press" says that can't be corroborated. the fbi has opened an investigation. >> in this day and age, it's that ripple effect that happened so fast that's so scary. >> reporter: the computers speed it up faster and faster but it came back fast too for the same reason. >> good point. thank you. now, as don said, stocks bounced back from the flash crash within minutes. the dow closed with a triple digit gain at 14, 653.

the broader indices were up by more than 1% apiece. more news came after the close of the market. apple's 2nd quarter earnings of $9.5 billion stronger than expected but that's actually an 18% drop from the same quarter last year marking apple's first year-over-year profit decline in a decade. investigators are piecing together what led up to the boston marathon bombings. they are getting clues from the surviving suspect who is in fair condition. vinita nair with what the suspect is telling the investigators. some tough details today. >> reporter: that's right. the suspect is here at beth israel hospital where he is recovering from multiple gunshot wounds. you said the word clues. that's exactly what they are getting right now. it is very little in terms of the motive but today for the first time, we heard from the widow of the slain brother. a sign that read, we are boston strong, is now on the doors of

boylston street apartment building that chris and lindsey returned to today. >> we are happy to be here. >> reporter: block by block, residents, business owners and workers were allowed back into the neighborhood the deadly bombings rocked eight days ago. >> we are safe and i think that was most important thing. >> reporter: the condition of 19-year-old bombing suspect johar tsarnaev has improved from serious to fair tuesday. he has been communicating with investigators mostly through writing because a gunshot wound to his neck has limited his ability to speak. sources tell cbs news the radical islamic views of tsarnaev's older brother were behind the bombing attacks and it does not appear they were connected to a terror group. the dead suspect's wife released a statement saying she was shocked to hear news reports about her husband and brother-in-law. she says she is cooperating with the investigation. public health officials revised the number of people injured in the attack from their initial report of 170 to now more than

280. that's because some of the survivors waited to get treatment for their injuries. a private funeral service was held today for 8-year-old martin richard. his mother and sister were seriously wounded in the attack. the family released a statement saying, this has been the most difficult week of their lives. m.i.t. campus police officer sean collier was also laid to rest tuesday. investigators tell cbs news the brothers assassinated the officer in his car so they could take his gun. vinita nair, cbs news, boston. >> reporter: we have also learned six weeks before the boston marathon bombings the older brother was at a new hampshire fireworks store. we're told at the store he bought two mortar kits. it's unknown at this time whether that was what was used in these two pressure cooker bombs but certainly another piece in the puzzle. >> any idea why it's taking so long for people to come forward with these injuries. >> reporter: you know, i think in a lot of instances, these people thought they had temporary injuries like a ruptured eardrum. they thought, hearing will come back quickly. only now they're realizing

things are not getting any better so we have heard from now 26 hospitals in and around the boston area and that's why that number of people injured was updated. >> okay. vinita nair in boston, thank you. the bay to breakers race is helping victims of the boston marathon. they are donating $5 to one fund boston for every person who registered between now and thursday at noon. more than 30,000 athletes are expected to run the annual 12k race on sunday, may 19. contra costa county supervisors are weighing the possibility of more fire station cuts. two more fire stations and several positions are on the chopping block. four stations have already closed since voters rejected a $75 a year parcel tax last november. the new cuts would include closing a station by july and another early next year. >> i know they have to cut but i can't even imagine on the new budget, cutting two more fire stations. it would devastate the area. >> the new budget also calls for staffing to be reduced to

fewer than 300 employees. that's down from 365 two years ago. supervisors take a final vote on the budget in three weeks. well, misconduct by san jose police officers is down to nearly a 20 year low. a new report found only 11 officers were disciplined in 2012. that's down from 42 the year before. according to the independent police auditor the number of officers receiving discipline is down 7%. students at two concord schools were put on lockdown as police searched for a carjacking suspect today around 11 a.m. when a person ivg a stolen car crashed into another car on concord boulevard. the suspect ran from the scene. concord high and el dorado middle school went on temporary lockdown as a precaution. the suspect got away. officials in santa cruz are ready to issue water restrictions because of a lack of rainfall this year. the city rules would mean less water for landscaping and filling up swimming pools this

summer. right now, the san lorenzo river the city's primary source of water is flowing at a rate normally seen in june or july. the district is trying to save 100 million gallons of water. the story much better in the east bay, however. east bay m.u.d. said today even with less snow melt runoff, it's not looking at water restrictions this summer. well, the hot streak was fun while it lasted. but things are starting to cool down. as we take a live look outside this evening, paul deanno tells us things are beginning to turn around, huh? >> all we need is a wind direction change. we are looking from oakland toward san francisco. you see the marine layer just hovering behind the city. mother nature turned on the onshore flow fan. look at the change in san francisco. record high at the airport yesterday 84. but right in downtown, yesterday we had 82 degrees. 11:30 this morning before the winds changed we were close to that at 77 degrees. now we're down near 60.

rally, the governor said he understands the importanceof public safety. sacramento police confirm that a man tried to gain access to the loft building where the governor lives, sunday night. the governor wasn't home at the time. a neighbor called police and the suspect was arrested on suspicion of prowling. authorities don't believe he was targeting the governor. a high-powered panel of former government leaders is urging congress not to let the boston bombings get in the way of pending immigration reforms. and they say silicon valley is a perfect example why. mark sayre is in san jose with details. >> reporter: well, allen, immigration reform one of the most complex and politically risky issues facing congress right now. the effort to get more high- tech workers into america is very much at the forefront. >> we believe that this is a critical issue to our country's future. reporter: former secretary of state condoleezza rice says the time for immigration reform is now. >> that ability to continue to

attract these ambitious people to fuel our economic growth and our economic development is at the core of our strength and we cannot afford to let that strength erode. >> reporter: rice cochairs an immigration task force of the bipartisan policy center which is working to help shape the immigration debate. one. key questions for silicon valley -- one of the key questions for silicon valley, visas which allow highly skilled workers to come to the u.s. right now only 65,000 are issued each year and one proposal in congress is to increase that to 110,000 per year. former mississippi governor hailey barbour is on th task force. >> it has to be adjustable up. >> reporter: with some calls in congress to call off immigration reform in the wake of the boston attack, both republican and democratic members of the panel say that wouldbl a mistake. >> that's wrong. it's wrong for a ong for a

lot of reasons but mostly because we all believe that if we get immigration right, if we can build a comprehensive bill, that will increase national security. >> reporter: they say high-tech issues can only be dealt with as part of a larger immigration reform package. >> it deals with border security. it deals with balancing the kind of workers we admit both high-tech and skilled workers, engineering level people, as well as people who will work in agriculture and construction. >> reporter: and to give you an idea of just how competitive this h1b visa program is, all 65,000 were gone in the first five days of filing this year, allen. the filing period opened april 1. by april 5 they were gone for next year. silicon valley wants more of those to get more workers here to keep the businesses going. >> so of the task force message today -- so the task force message today obviously in a news press conference type setting. what's the plan to get to

video... released by the bey hills police this afternoon. all right. check out this wild road rage video released by the beverly hills police this afternoon. you see that white bmw pulled down the alley going after the bicyclist hit the man, pins him against that big metal trash bin. investigators say the bicyclist was hurt but he is going to be okay. they say the whole incident started a couple of blocks away

when the bicyclist actually punched the driver of the car first. police looking for that driver. a search is on for the owners of a san jose-based moving company and three employees. they are accused of ripping off up to thousands of customers over the past few years. it's one of the worst cases of moving company fraud ever seen here in the bay area. reporter: ronnie and his wife are on the move and the d.a. thinks they may be in israel. the pair are accused of running a moving company out of the san jose industrial park but asap relocations operated under 7 different names and authorities say all of them have been ripping people off. >> it was a widespread scam. they're accused of giving low ball quotes via telephone to people who are seeking moving services and failing to disclose that there are going to be additional fees charged on moving day. >> reporter: for example, look at these scathing online reviews. complaints about moving jobs

that cost many times the quoted price, exorbitant fees for parking supplies and threats of holding property hostage if customers didn't pay. >> we even had witnesses tell us that they were the victims of those auctions where their goods were auctioned off. >> reporter: the companies have d and f ratings from the better business bureau. but donahoe says the business survived by frequently changing names. >> the different names allowed them to leave their bad business reputation behind. >> reporter: yesterday, three employees were charged with grand theft and fraud and in addition to the company's owners, three others are facing similar warrants also believed to be on the run. so how do you find a good reputable mover? relying on one source like yelp isn't enough. they just changed names. so personal recommendations from friends are obviously best. and make sure the mover has a permit in the state's public utilities commission. we put a link with some good

resources at kpix.com/consumerwatch. let's go live to ken bastida in mobile5 sausalito to tells about a one-of-a-kind aircraft touring the bay area. >> reporter: this is an amazing aircraft, allen. it's called the solar impulse. it's a swiss-made 100% solar aircraft. it's a long-range aircraft that can stay up for a long time. we caught up to it at moffett field today. check it out. it's the brainchild of andre borechberg and the pilot. it's got room for one crewman, the pilot. it's about 70 feet long with a wingspan of 208 feet. that's comparable with the airbus a340. but it only weighs 3500 pounds. and it is powered by four 10- horsepower electric motors. it doesn't go very fast, only about 43 miles per hour. but this is the cool part about this aircraft. it is 100% solar.

it is powered by 11,000 photovoltaic cells. the pilot today says actually this aircraft is more about solar than it is about aviation. >> at the same time protect the environment and allow incredible things like this. you know, if all the technologies we have in solar impulse were used everywhere in the world, the world could divide by two weeks energy consumption and produce half of its needs with renewable sources already today. >> reporter: yeah. pretty cool. it has set all kinds of aviation records nonetheless. and it has a bay area tie-in, too. those photovoltaic cells were actually put together by sunpower down in the south bay. they plan to fly this thing around the world. they are going to circumnavigate the globe. it's going to take 20 to 25 days to do that. and they expect to do that sometime in 2015. but we are getting a sneak peek right here in the bay area this

afternoon. reporting live from sausalito, i'm ken bastida, kpix 5. >> very cool. just didn't probably want to fly into the fog bank that's right along the coast for very long. good today. tomorrow eh. might want to consider taking off from an inland airport because we have some changes coming. all it takes is one picture to show you the marine layer is back like a monster lurking offshore. there it is. it's about 500 feet thick but it's a sign that things are changing. the winds are changing. we still have plenty of sunshine. but it's not going to be as warm. concord in the 90s yesterday in some spots around concord. currently 78. the cooldown has begun. oakland down to 66 after the mid-80s yesterday. and downtown san francisco hit 77 earlier today. you're down 20 degrees. all the way to 57 degrees. still leave the windows open tonight. pleasant night lows around 50. san rafael down to 49. oakland 51. redwood city 50. but there is a change coming. now, high pressure hasn't left. what it's done, it's moved farther away and that has opened the door if you will for

some cloud cover to work up from southern california and that's going to be with us for the next couple mornings right along the coastline foggy tomorrow and thursday. and with that high pressure area just kind of moving a little bit offshore, we are going to see more of that cloud cover working in and cooler air working in so we're trending cooler for the next couple of days. then high pressure will shove that low out of the way and build back to what i think is a happy medium. it's not going to be hot but it's also not going to be cold and that will begin friday through the weekend. highs in the 70s inland and upper 60s, low 70s near the bay. the fog coming back to the coast tonight. you saw it sitting offshore. nobody hits 80 tomorrow. the coolest day and the foggiest day will be thursday. tomorrow, wednesday, upper 60s for oakland. mid-70s for san jose. certainly cooler than what we have had over the past several days. palo alto 72. cupertino 72. and union city a high of 70. concord tomorrow still above average still pleasant sunshine 77 for you. dublin 76.

on and you can have it delivered. burger k well, the next time you're craving a whopper you can have it your way and you can have it delivered. burger king is rolling out a delivery service to three new metropolitan areas including san francisco. orders must be at least $10 and placed between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m. 15 restaurants in the bay area will be participating. we are used to seeing the calorie information on restaurant menus, but kpix 5's patrick sedillo shows us a new way to encourage you to eat fewer calories. reporter: you eat fast food? >> i do very often. i do. i enjoy it. >> reporter: donna gets away with eating fast food by avoiding cars and mass transportation. consumers have gotten used to seeing calorie information on the fast food menus, but researchers say it doesn't seem to change their eating habits. but what if the menu showed how much exercise you would need to burn off that hamburger. >> it would take about an hour

to burn three to four hundred calories depending on the pace. >> reporter: tara henderson should know. she is a personal trainer and nutritionist. according to a study, brisk walking -- >> probably four miles an hour? >> reporter: -- is a good choice when it comes to keeping fit and the researchers found that if the menu also displayed the minutes of walking required to burn off the calories, people ate less. >> i definitely think it's good for people to be mindful and know exactly what they are eating to then choose if they want to eat it. >> i walk a lot. >> reporter: here' mcdonald's a double quarter pounder with cheese is 750 calories, 2.5 hours to walk it off. two slices of pizza from dominos 848 calories, four hours to walk it of. and a vente caramel capuccino from starbucks is 510 calories, two hours to walk that off. >> i eat fast food like a crazy person. generally i'll go through a phase and feel disgusted with myself and then eat a lot of fruits and veg. >> reporter: more fruits and
